Each year, Prep students have the opportunity to act as counselors for Camp Kismet, a summer camp for underprivileged children in the poorest areas of rural West Virginia. Camp Kismet is run by Catholic Charities of West Virginia. These week-long camps are often the only vacations these children have, and Prep students are there to enhance and support their experiences. This summer, Prep students will serve at Camp Kismet from June 16-22, 2013.
In addition to Camp Kismet, Prep students may serve and retreat at Nazareth Farm or Bethlehem Farms, two programs run in rural West Virginia. Students learn there about the dignity of hard work as they work alongside the community members to improve housing, farm, and serve in these impoverished and often forgotten areas. This summer, Prep students will serve at NazFarm from June 23-29 and BethFarm from July 7-13, 2013.
We also serve with Community Development Outreach Ministries in Charleston, WV. Students work in the Avesta Drive Community Center with children who live in rural poverty. We spend our time working with the children, doing basic cleanup and manual labor around the community center, and learning about the lifestyle in the rural Kanawha County. This summer, Prep students will serve at CDOM from July 14-20, 2013.
Lastly, we work with WV Ministry and Advocacy Workcamps in Gilbert, WV. WVMAW is a non-profit organization that was created to help WV residents whose homes have been destroyed by natural disaster, particularly flooding. Our work includes home repair and reconstruction, playground restoration, and parks cleanup. We spend our time out of service with the people of the Gilbert community. This summer, Prep students will serve at WVMAW from July 7-13, 2013.
