Faculty Spotlight

Ana Garcia is in her forty second year of teaching at Prep, here is what has kept her inspired and committed to our community for so many years.....

What has kept you at Prep for so many years ? What do you love most about being here ?

I have stayed here because of the Jesuit Principles I grew up with and wanted to pass it on to the men of Prep. A true Jesuit Educator must prepare men to be leaders of the world. They must create and solve problems, not create them. My class is the microcosm of the macrocosm. The students' commitment to their own academic growth inspire me to create new ways to teach and prepare them for their lives as leaders, parents, husbands, and men of Prep for life.
As a Jesuit educator I had been given the opportunity to make my students life-long learnes by taking them to theatre (Repertorio Español), folkloric ballets, flamenco presentations, museums and literary presentations at Instituto Cervantes. In the last three years I have encouraged my students to crate electronic portfolios to prepare them for the future of multimedia communication. I must take my students to a higher level of consiciousness. Like the eagle: They must set their compass with God as home. They must fly above the storm knowing that their wings are strong and can sore to great heights and always see the way clear no matter what obstacle come their way. They must leave behind persons or things that do not edify them, just like the eagle takes his own beak off when it no longer is strong and sturdy to help it feed well.

Which Jesuit has had the most significant impact on your life during your time at Prep ?

I am the product of the Jesuits in St. Peter's College and the Jesuits that taught me when I arrived here in 1972. These priest were Renaissance men. They had courage and compassion. Father Ed Dolan does stand out because he was the one that helped me as a friend, counselor and confesor when I was going through my divorce.
Because of his wisdom I learned that God would never excomunicate me from his Sanctum that God will be with me all the days of my life.

Dr.Richard Kennedy another long time Prep faculty member reflects on his many years at Prep.

What has kept you at Prep for so many years ?

I've stayed here so long because I really love English and never
tire of teaching it to students who are very nice young men. Equally
important is the friendship and inspiration I have gotten from
hundreds of colleagues.

What do you love most about being here ?

I love the fact that I have been treated with respect and fairness
and  (I hope)affection over the years, and have been given the trust
and freedom to teach what I love rather than having to follow a
syllabus drawn up by others with no input from me.

Which Jesuit has had the most significant impact on your life during your time at Prep ?

It's very hard to pick just one so I'll say Ray Sweitzer for his warmth,
ditto Harry Oppido, ditto Tony Azzarto, ditto John Mullin. Although I
did not know him for too long, I will never forget Tom McManus's
sweetness. And how can anyone not mention Jim Dinneen? It was not just
the great knowledge these men had but the almost tangible love and
decency which emantes (emanated) from them in their teaching and in
their lives. Many others come to mind, but I'll stop with these.
