Last Saturday, a contingent of thirty-seven Boy Scouts descended on Prep's Moriarty Science Center for a merit badge fair inspired by NASA’s S.T.E.M. initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Five merit badge sessions, chemistry, computers, geology, oceanography, and textile were offered to the boys, who originated from five different troops based in Jersey City, Bayonne, Kearny, Little Falls, and Somerville.
The scouts were taught by three members of Prep’s Science department, Rosemary Annetta P’11, Alex Canale ‘05, and Catherine Eppler, as well as technology major and Eagle Scout, Michael Turner ’12, and Barbara Peters, wife of Prep English teacher, Rich Peters ’85.
This year’s event was the second annual S.T.E.M. – based fair, the brainchild of Prep teachers and Eagle Scouts, Alex Canale ’05 and Rich Peters ’85, along with retired Prep Science teacher, Dave Lagerstrom. The feedback from the youngsters was overwhelmingly positive, and both Canale and Peters were continually asked to continue this wonderful experience again next year.
