Charles J. Beirne, S.J., '56, served as president of Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, from 2000-2007.
In your prayers, please remember the soul of Charles J. Beirne, S.J., '56 who passed away recently. A native of Jersey City, Fr. Beirne entered the Society of Jesus in 1956. His 54 years as a Jesuit saw him take on many roles, including the presidency of LeMoyne College from 2000-2007.
Fr. Beirne's early work in the Society saw him serving at several Jesuit colleges and high schools, until he left for El Salvador in the wake of the 1989 murders of six Jesuits and their two lay companions at the Universidad Centroamericana. He served for three years as that university's Vice President for Academic Affairs, while also advising the U.S. governemtn on Latin American affairs. Eight years later, after serving in a similar role in Guatemala at the Universidad Rafael Landivar, he returned to the United States to become Le Moyne's eleventh president.
Recently, following his tenure at Le Moyne, Fr. Beirne had been consulting on the formation of a Jesuit university in Africa while teaching at Fordham University.

A vigil service will be held on Friday, July 23, from 7pm to 9pm at Fordham University, O'Keefe Commons, O'Hare Hall, Bronx, NY.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, July 24, at Fordham University Church, Bronx, NY.
