Pope Francis will be in the US from Tuesday, September 22 until Sunday, September 27 (See his full schedule of events here). As a Catholic, Jesuit school we will take this incredible opportunity to reflect upon and share our Catholic faith. As a Jesuit school, we feel a particular tie to Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope. And so, while his schedule does not include a visit to Grand & Warren, Prep is nevertheless ready to welcome the Pope to the United States.
Following last week's Mass of the Holy Spirit, the Class of 2019 gathered and embarked on the beginnings of their journey as Prep men with the annual IgNite Retreat. Created in 2007, the retreat helps freshmen acclimate to their newfound home, to Prep ideals such as being a Man For Others, and to the life of Saint Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus.
For the first time since last spring, the full Prep community was on campus at the same time on Thursday, asking the blessings of the Holy Spirit while renewing a tradition nearly as old as Jesuit education itself. Although rain showers forced the usually outdoor celebration into the close confines of the gym, the mood remained bright for this celebration of the possibilities the new year holds.
The population of the Saint Peter's Prep community grew by 264 on Thursday, as the Class of 2019 made the journey to Grand & Warren from throughout the region for the first time as Prep students. It's an early step in a four-year journey that will come to define who they are, what they stand for, and where the rest of their lives will take them.
